Syre Circular Textile Recycling: Innovation in Action
Syre circular textile recycling is at the forefront of innovation in the sustainable textiles sector. Following the recent challenges faced by Renewcell, we are witnessing exciting new material solutions emerging, and Syre is leading the charge in this arena.
Founded by Vargas and H&M Group, the Stockholm-based company Syre is on a mission to transform the textiles industry. Their goal revolves around decarbonizing and significantly reducing textile waste through large-scale textile-to-textile recycling, focusing primarily on polyester. Syre's ambitious plans include establishing multiple production plants globally, supported by a groundbreaking offtake agreement with H&M Group. This partnership ensures that Syre can produce their circular polyester, which notably lowers CO2e emissions by up to 85% compared to traditional oil-based polyester manufacturing.

As of today, polyester constitutes around 20% of materials used by H&M, with less than 5% being viscose. With a clear roadmap to achieve sustainability, H&M Group aims for all materials to be either recycled or sustainably sourced by 2030, including a target of 30% recycled materials by 2025, escalating to 50% by 2030. To ensure a dedicated supply of recycled polyester, H&M has initiated a $600 million take-or-pay contract with Syre over the next seven years. This structure guarantees a reliable income stream for Syre while also securing consistent demand for their products—reflecting a trend in long-term contracts that benefits both parties.
Currently, Syre is constructing its first production facility in North Carolina, USA, anticipated to become operational in 2024. The strategy encompasses a global expansion, beginning in Asia and Europe, ultimately aiming for 12 gigascale plants capable of producing over 3 million metric tons of circular polyester annually within a decade. By 2032, it's projected that Syre will be instrumental in eliminating more than 15 million metric tons of CO2e emissions through its innovative processes.
While Syre's primary focus is to launch circular polyester into the market, its platform remains flexible enough to explore different fibers and technologies moving forward. The announcements of new partnerships and recycled material initiatives, such as Gap's collaboration with Ambercycle for introducing recycled polyester into future products, further indicate a thriving market despite the setbacks faced by others like Renewcell.
The evolving landscape of textile recycling represents considerable strides towards sustainability. However, challenges persist—primarily overproduction and consumption within the fashion industry. It’s critical for brands to support these innovative textile solutions actively and incorporate them into their permanent collections for a truly circular future.
