Fashion Colour Trends AW22: What London Fashion Week Revealed

  • by Scarlet Destiny Admin

Fashion colour trends AW22 brought together vivid statement shades and calming neutrals for the Autumn/Winter 2022/23 London Fashion Week season. Pantone’s report reflected a desire for optimism, wellbeing and self-expression following a period of considerable uncertainty. It comes after the company announced Very Peri as the Colour of the Year for 2022, so it’s exciting to see a new wide range of predictions.

The colour palette reveals an obvious contrast through top ten standout colours and five core classics. Current lifestyle trends are incorporated into the colour predictions, including the fusion of the nature-centric craving for wellbeing and the hope for happiness and positivity. Bold red, green, yellow, and orange are seen in the brighter hues, whilst calmer colours like blue, pink, and brown are included in the neutral tones. The contrast within fashion colour trends AW22 reflected both a renewed appetite for energy and a continuing need for reassurance and calm.

“As we look into the future, we see two emerging paths that while completely diverse, are inevitably interconnected. The intense dichotomy comes through in our colour choices for AW22, where we see bold and brash colours lend themselves to exaggerated statements reflecting our desire to embrace life with full vigour, coalescing with an array of neutral and natural tones that embody a sense of calm and containment and satisfy our need for harmony and tranquillity.” - Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Pantone’s interpretation of fashion colour trends AW22 therefore centred on two connected moods: bold celebration and grounded tranquillity.

Several shades within fashion colour trends AW22 also echoed Scarlet Destiny’s bold colour identity, particularly the vivid reds, pinks and greens.

At the time, the rise of digital fashion and the announcement of Metaverse Fashion Week raised questions about whether fashion colour trends AW22 would influence both physical collections and virtual garments. Digital fashion was beginning to expand the ways designers could use colour, texture and light beyond the limitations of traditional materials.

Looking back, fashion colour trends AW22 captured a moment when the industry was balancing escapism with stability. Bold colours expressed optimism and renewed energy, while earthy and neutral shades offered familiarity and calm.

Trend forecasts do not determine exactly what designers will create, but they reveal the cultural moods influencing fashion at a particular moment.
